Our President

The President is the head of our state. He is elected by the people. The President represents the state of Azerbaijan. He is the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces created to defend our Homeland against the enemy.

Ilham Aliyev is the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Ilham Heydar oghlu Aliyev was born on 24 December 1961 in the city of Baku.

During 1967-1977, he studied at a secondary school in the city of Baku.

In 1977, Ilham Aliyev entered the Moscow State International Relations Institute (MSIRI).

After graduating from the Moscow State International Relations Institute, he entered the postgraduate course of this institute in 1982.

In 1985, he received the degree of a candidate of historical sciences, having defended the thesis.

During 1985-1990, he professed at the Moscow State International Relations Institute.

During 1991-1994, Ilham Aliyev engaged in a private business and headed a number of production and commercial companies.

From 1994 to August 2003, Ilham Aliyev was a vice-president of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic, and then first vice-president of the company. He took active part in the implementation of “Heydar Aliyev’s Oil Strategy”.

Ilham Aliyev is the author of a number of research works on geopolitical aspects of the sovereign Azerbaijan’s oil policy. He is a doctor of political sciences.

He was elected twice – in 1995 and 2000 - a member to the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2003, his authorities as an MP were terminated due to his being appointed to the office of Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Since 1997, Ilham Aliyev has been the President of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan. For the services to the development of sports and Olympic movement, Ilham Aliyev was decorated with a higher order of the International Olympic Committee.

Ilham Aliyev was elected a deputy chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party in 1999, first deputy chairman in 2001 and the chairman of the party in 2005.

During 2001-2003, Ilham Aliyev headed the delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the  Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

In January 2003, he was elected a deputy chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), and a Board member of PACE.

On 4 August 2003, after being ratified by the National Assembly, Ilham Aliyev was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

On 15 October 2003, he was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Over 76 percent of the electors voted for Ilham Aliyev at the presidential elections. On 31 October 2003, he embarked on the fulfilment of his authorities.

In April 2004, Ilham Aliyev was awarded a diploma of PACE’s active member and medal of PACE for his active participation in PACE’s activity, and loyalty to the principles of PACE.

Having won 88.73% of the electors’ votes in the elections held on 15 October 2008, Ilham Aliyev was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the second time. On 24 October 2008, he embarked on the fulfilment of his authorities.

Having won 84.54% of the electors’ votes in the elections held on 9 October 2013, Ilham Aliyev was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the third time. On 19 October 2008, he embarked on the fulfilment of his authorities.

At the presidential elections held on April 11, 2018 too, having won 86.02 percent of the votes, Ilham Aliyev was elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

At the early presidential elections held on February 7, 2024, having won 92.12 percent of the votes, Ilham Aliyev was re-elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Ilham Aliyev perfectly speaks the Azerbaijani, Russian, English, French and Turkish languages.

Ilham Aliyev has been decorated with a number of state orders and medals, and international awards, and has been elected an honorary doctor of various countries.

He is married, has three children.
